Besides being legendary comedians and actors, Tina Fey, Dan Aykroyd, Martin Short, Mike Myers, Bill Murray, Steve Carrell, and Stephen Colbert all have something else in common. They all preformed at “The Second City Repertoire Company” before their notable careers were launched.
In the 1950s, The Second City began as a floor show performed by the University of Chicago students. By 1961, the Second City sent a cast to Broadway and then expanded into three touring companies, becoming a known talent pool of versatile actors.
The style of Second City may have changed over the years, but the format has remained the same with a mix of improvised and scripted scenes. Audiences enjoy being part of the show and participating with the cast.
Second City opened another theatre in Toronto In 1973. Soon after, word of mouth of the amazing talent performing at both theatres, members of the cast was requested to join Saturday Night Live. Year after year, SNL looks for new faces at Second City. Classes are held for prospective comedians/actors at all three Second City locations of Hollywood, Chicago and Toronto. The next generation of comic legends is now performing at Second City as known as the “50 Years of Funny.”
