Everyone enjoys those incomparable opinion pieces, especially when it comes to the confident claims that this movie or that one meets the "top 100 movie films of the century" criteria. However, no matter how many articles or books that brings a "best" ten to one thousand list, there is one cinematic classic that never fails to be missing from any published opinions. The 1942 film, Casablanca, a tale of love, loyalty and sacrifice, has mesmerized viewers and critics for decades.
Never did Hollywood producers and distributors anticipate this film to become a major hit. Casablanca has withstood the test of time and is considered the top DVD must have. It is ironic that it became a masterpiece by quite by accident
Although stated as a love triangle there is more substance and no film has ever depicted the desperation and determination of trying to leave occupied Europe as Casablanca does. Surprisingly, the mix of cultures join as a one, during their stopover towards freedom, as indicated by all singing the French National Anthem to antagonize their German counterparts. They just do not make characters like the ones in Casablanca anymore.
Besides the three main characters, Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Paul Henreid, the film would be lackluster without the supporting cast of Sidney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre and Claude Rains. Even one line actors would be missed if their scenes landed on the cutting room floor. There are no small parts in Casablanca, only great actors, making this film the top of the chart classic.
