According to Bloomberg´s, the recent Debbie Reynolds’s exceptional collection of Hollywood costumes and memorabilia that was auctioned off revealed that a movie star may have been larger than life on screen but their stature was diminutive.
The auction revealed the true size of Marilyn Monroe and has ended the on-going debate that she was at times a hefty size 16, or a 12 in her leaner appearances.
By today´s standards in dress size, Marilyn Monroe´s size varied from a size 2 to a 4 with the exception of being a size 12 when she starred in “Some Like it Hot” with Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis. However, she was pregnant then and in the early sixties a size 12 is equivalent to a size 8 today.
Her fabulous white dress from "Seven Year Itch" fetched more than more than $5.6 million and was a size 2 with a waist of 22 inches.
It does make sense for two reasons that she was not as pleasingly plump as we imagined. Standing at 5 feet, 5½ inches, she weighed an average during her film career 118 pounds.
The other antidote is the film camera adds at least 20 lbs. or so to the subject movie goers see on the screen. Film stars were undoubtly thin, and still are today.
