This Sunday is Mother´s Day and in the United States, the holiday wasn't officially acknowledged until the early twentieth century.
Many countries celebrate Mother's Day on different days, and for various historical reasons. For instance, in England, Mother´s Day is celebrated on a Sunday of Lent, and is documented as far back as the 16th century.
The first Mother´s Day is believed to go back much further. The Ancient Greeks formulated their version of the holiday centered around Rhea, a mother of the gods. The Romans gave homage to another mother goddess, Cybele, in celebration.
In the states, Julia Howe, author of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," wanted to unite women against war and promoted peace, motherhood and womanhood. She copied the idea from England after the civil war, and tried to issue a proclamation to create the holiday for June 2 in 1870. It had failed.
Anna Jarvis was influence by Julia Howe´s efforts. Anna worked to see that a bill was presented on the floor of the U. S. Senate to honor all mothers, both living and dead. This bill was defeated also.
Despite her failed attempts, Anna continued the crusade to have a day for mothers and the first one officiated in West Virginia, in 1908.
By 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared Mother Day to be recognized by the nation. Year after year, children take that one day and show appreciation to their moms.
