One of the biggest festivals taking place in Valencia, Spain is Las Fallas getting ready to explode on March 1st.
This festival takes almost a year of preparations and this where Valencia truly shines and overflows with energy. Daily fireworks at 2PM are designed not so much to be seen as heard and it is an honor to obtain the loudest decibels. The visual one is an evening with a 30 minute display and is the most spectacular exhibit of pyrotechnics.
However, the most important element in Las Fallas is the Fallas themselves. Never will the visitor see so many satirical pop culture and political statements made from paper mache, wood and wax into giant figurines.
These sculptures are magnificent and they placed around the center of the city of Valencia. There are quite expensive to build, costing upwards to $750,000. The funds are arranged by the members of the Falla-Community through donations only.
The scheduled 600 sculptures, with some of them as high as eight stories in height, will be sadly but ceremonially burned to the ground at the end of the festival on March 19th and 20th (called “La Crema” ) One will only have the momentary remembrance or can forever hold the memory by capturing these amazing displays with a camera.
